We are looking for a highly skilled Network Engineer with strong experience in designing, implementing, and maintaining service‑provider‑grade IP networks. This role requires deep expertise in Layer 2/3 networking, strong troubleshooting skills, and experience working within an ISP, telecom, or carrier‑grade environment—reflecting the typical expectations of network engineering roles in Johannesburg and South Africa.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure, including routing, switching, and security components.
• Implement and support IP/MPLS, Layer 2/3 services, and high‑availability network designs.
• Conduct proactive network monitoring, troubleshooting, and optimization to ensure maximum uptime.
• Upgrade and maintain firmware, OS, and network hardware in line with stability and security best practices.
• Implement and manage network security protocols, firewall rules, and access control.
• Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—including NOC, provisioning, and engineering—to support customer deployments and resolve escalated issues.
• Produce technical documentation, network diagrams, and change‑control submissions.
• Engage with vendors and data‑centre partners to support new deployments or troubleshoot infrastructure.
• Participate in an on‑call rotation for after‑hours network support when required.

Required Experience & Skills

• 5+ years experience in network engineering, ideally within an ISP or telecom environment—consistent with typical South African ISP network engineer expectations.
• Strong understanding of:
  • Routing protocols (BGP, OSPF, IS‑IS)
  • Switching technologies (VLANs, STP, trunking)
  • MPLS and carrier‑grade routing
  • IPv4/IPv6 planning and subnetting
• Hands‑on experience with major vendor platforms (e.g., Cisco, Juniper, MikroTik).
• Proficiency with network monitoring and diagnostic tools (e.g., LibreNMS, The Dude, Wireshark).
• Experience implementing or supporting network security (ACLs, firewalls, VPNs).
• Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
• Relevant certifications beneficial (e.g., CCNA, CCNP).

Nice‑to‑Have

• Experience with datacentre networking, peering, or ISP backhaul infrastructure.
• Knowledge of automation/scripting (Python, Ansible).
• Experience supporting customer implementations in NOC or field‑engineering environments.
